Match report Broomfield 2s Vs Burnham Sport 2s

Having been ransacked by the 1s, the 2s set out with 5 colts but thanks to John and Gary the average age was still above 50. On a hot and humid day it was ideal batting conditions so the captain naturally lost the toss and out to field we went. After last week’s debacle we were second in the league to Burnham so this was a top of the table clash against a worthy foe. Jack Reilley opened the bowling with typical gusto and after a cautious start Burnham lost their first wicket to a well taken low catch at gulley by Graeme Mansfield. Robert Cook then came on first change and some tidy lines hooked another top order bat to keep the pressure on. However their quality and depth began to show as a few loose overs kept things interesting for Burnham. In testing conditions it was a good fielding display with everyone playing their part, but the Burnham opener carried his bat, helping them finish 224/5.

With the O’Riordans opening there’s always a chance and sure enough they set about the total with conviction. John led the way and after passing his 50 controversially decided to change his 10 year old bat for his new one. Once the old bat had been sent down the Chelmer in a long boat under a hail of flaming arrows John put the new one to the test. Several very convincing boundaries followed to christen ‘Dragon Slayer’ but unfortunately it’s still wielded by John so he was duly bowled by a ball that didn’t deserve the wicket. Chris followed soon after and the Broomfield batting depth was exposed to the full fury of the league leaders. One Burnham bowler in particular seemed to have his eye in as he ripped through Broomfield’s middle order. There were no real highlights after the O’Riordans departed and this was proven by a flustered Robin Baker belatedly coming to the crease, who, in his defence, had been umpiring minutes before, and expected to somehow steady the sinking ship. A duck ensued and a slight wag from the tail was barely enough restore batting pride. An 80 run defeat for Broomfield but a positive performance in the field suggesting that the reverse fixture in 9 weeks time won’t be so easy for Burnham...
