Rayleigh 4th v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 24 Jul 2021 at 1:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 7 Wickets

Match report With the weather forecast the night before suggesting this fixture would be better spent collecting animals two by two it was somewhat of a surprise for the captain to find himself flipping the coin at 1pm, a task made all the more difficult by a dislocated finger the previous Saturday. Nevertheless out into the field Broomfield went with Noah and Liam opening. A few wayward balls suggested that we might make beating this relegation threatened team more difficult than it should have been but eventually a breakthrough from Noah settled the nerves. Bowling changed to Andy and Robin who walked to the crease comparing injuries but Andy's hobble didn't seem to hold him back as he claimed a victim caught behind, well taken by Stuart in the slips. Robin, or 'the Claw', as he will henceforth be known, was somehow managing to bowl a tidy line and length and his first wicket of the match came via the batsman playing on. Another wicket followed in quick succession, clean bowled this time, then a 3rd suggested that working fingers aren't all they're cracked up to be. Young Edward Baker made an appearance and kept things tidy then Thomas Wiffen, bowling off his full run up, joined the party with an impressive spell including an LBW. Stuart Watts slowed things down for a while but started to show frustration at some of the loose fielding that had started to creep in; anger that was put to good use later. Noah then finished things off with another two wickets that nearly mopped up the tail, Rayleigh finishing 160/8.

With limited proven batting resource 160 wasn't an easy target to chase down and Jim Merrick cranked up the pressure by succumbing to the raw pace of the 67 year old opening bowler in the first over. Liam joined Stuart in the middle and the latter started to put earlier frustration to good use, twatting (as I believe is the correct technical parlance from the last match report) the ball to all corners. The opposition captain had alluded to the fact that his own bowling resource was in short supply but Stuart was not in a charitable mood as he accelerated towards his maiden 100 for the club. Some useful contributions from Liam and Noah helped things along but this was the Stuart show and he was here to entertain; 14 fours and 5 sixes showed he meant business and thank goodness as there wasn't much left in the hutch to come. Abhi stayed with him all the way and very much held up an end, not wanting to distract from Stuart's good work. We crossed the line in 29 overs and 110 not out for Mr Watts is evidence of a man in form. This victory, the 2nd in a row against a bottom-two side, means that we are now comfortably mid table. Hopefully we can now go into the remaining fixtures looking to right some wrongs from earlier in the season and build on this recent run to finish as high as we can.
