Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Broomfield 2s vs Galleywood 2s

A rain delayed start meant that only 30 overs per innings was possible but with most other teams in the division abandoning, an opportunity for a bonus win presented itself. With Broomfield choosing to bowl first the pressure was on Galleywood to set a high tempo but Raj and Robin were in a miserly mood with very little being given away in the first 10 overs. The Pynes took over and wickets began to fall, first for Noah with Stuart Watts taking a catch in the deep to spring the trap that had been set, then Andy clean bowled another off his ever shortening run up. Pynes then combined after the elder reluctantly ran, or at least hobbled, to catch off the younger. Time for Team Atkins as both Liam and Scott took an end resulting in a first wicket of the season for Liam. The openers came back on to finish things off with Robin picking up a wicket, but Raj took a bit of flak off an increasingly desperate opposition, Galleywood finishing 136/5.

With Micheal presumably heading to Boreham Jim Merrick opened the batting with Stuart and the duo made a bright start, comfortably staying ahead of the required run rate. Despite looking set Stuart went first which brought in last week’s hero, Liam. The new pairing just about kept the scoring where it needed to be but an erroneous call from Liam ended Jim’s impressive cameo as an opener; his 34 once again going beyond the Captain’s brief of ‘just survive the first over!’. Matty Mansfield into the fray and he immediately showed his intent as the run rate increased. He unfortunately tried a bit too hard and briefly turned the grey sky blue as he called out his frustration. The pressure was now on young gun Noah to deliver as he and Liam tried to take the game to Galleywood but some solid bowling kept them in check. Liam went so the captain had to turn to his big hitters to try and salvage the situation; first Raj who couldn’t quite connect then Andy who did get hold of one to draw the scores level with 2 balls of the match remaining. The field was brought up to surround Noah and the whoops and shouts may have intimidated a lesser man, instead he nonchalantly dispatched the penultimate ball into the neighbouring field to never be found again. A big finish and a win that we made a little harder than it should have been but with most others not playing it could be an important one.
