Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Burnham Sports 2nd X1 on Sat 05 Sep 2020 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report 2nd attempt with Burnham, the game a couple of weeks ago being washed out. Captain Robin went into the match feeling like the Pied Piper leading a merry band with 6 players aged 16 or under against a team that beat us comfortably home and away last season; it’s fair to say the captain was nervous. Broomfield into the field first with Robin and Jack opening the bowling. Runs were kept tight with less than 40 given away off the initial 10 overs. The able-bodied Pyne and Scot Reilley then took over and things began to happen. Scot removed both openers, one of whom had made a big century against us last year before handing over to Michael Sawyer and Robert Cook, who kept the pressure on with Robert adding another wicket. Young Henry Brannan then made his season debut which resulted in another breakthrough. Robin brought himself back on and picked up a ‘proper’ wicket via a well taken catch behind the stumps by Matty while Jack kept the pressure on the other end. Burnham finished 187, a good score but one that could be overturned.

Liam Atkins then opened the batting as the senior partner alongside the gutsy Michael Sawyer. Michael hit a lovely 6 off his 2nd ball but then got a little ahead of himself as the next one went straight up in the air. Henry came in at 3 and immediately showed intent as he punished any bad balls. With Liam supporting the young pair kept the run rate where it needed to be. Henry fell for an impressive 28 which brought in Scot Reilley. He kept the scoreboard ticking over until Matty Mansfield arrived on the scene. He again showed a positive attitude looking to hit runs where he could. Scot fell for 13 which brought on the Pyne with fully functioning joints. Him and Matty kept the run rate in touch but with not much proven batting to come the young pair had a lot of weight on their shoulders and was coped with admirably, Matty eventually falling for 43. Captain Robin into the middle, a few double figure scores this season have perhaps hinted at the batsman within desperately trying to get out and a series of leg side blows meant it was time for the pupae to turn into the beautiful batting butterfly. It may not have been quite like that but Noah and Robin chipped away at the required runs and the two of them carried their bats to the end, Noah 35 and Robin 40 not out respectively to bring a maiden win of the season for a young Broomfield side. A great win against a worthy foe and most importantly with a team that suggests the future is very bright.
