Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v High Roding 2nd on Sat 29 Aug 2020 at 13:00
Match was Abandoned

Match report Walking out on a beautiful sunny day was how it should be in August but John and young Abhinav braved wet and windy conditions as they opened the batting. John saw off the first few balls but then Abhi played round his first delivery and trudged back to the pavilion with a look of disbelieve on his face; at least he’s learnt that you can’t be a batsman until you’ve been out first ball. Scot Reilley then came in at 3 and seemed to be doing well until he gently knocked one back to the bowler. Matty Mansfield and Noah Pyne steadied the ship with 21 and 33 respectively, the 16 and 14 year olds showing the rest of us how it’s done. Captain Robin came on and eked out 11 whilst avoiding decapitators from their man-giant bowler. However, by the time Andy Pyne hobbled in the score board was in need of a boost. The tail didn’t stay with him for too long but he didn’t need them as he continued his rich vain of batting form with 57 not out, with few singles. Indeed an opposition fielder was heard to say that they’d never seen anyone have such disregard for 3 men on a boundary.

With Andy helping us post a half decent score of 166 it was Broomfield into the field. A quick turnaround was delayed by impression time from John. Last season, in a league match against Beaulieu, John entertained us all with his Navajo anti-rain dance as we chased the win, however this time we were treated to Gandalf from Lord of the Rings as he screamed ‘you shall not pass!’ to the rest of us who were keen to resume despite the drizzle. After patting down the creases with his wand he eventually allowed play to continue and High Roding were in no mood to hang around. An early wicket from the impressive new boy, Raj, didn’t seem to phase them as their No. 2&3 pushed hard for the win. Runs were leaking away until Scot Reilley found his rhythm and ripped through the middle order, inc an opportunity for a hat trick ball. However just as things were getting interesting the rain began to creep back making things very difficult with catches being put down and beamers appearing out of nowhere. John decided enough was enough and stormed off the field, presumably to make everyone a nice cup of tea, then the rest of us followed suit a few overs later as things became unplayable. A frustrating day for all as the match was abandoned, High Roding would have seen themselves as favourites to win but you never know with cricket. On to the next match.
