Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Broomfield 2s vs Old Chelmsfordians 3

It was 2nd in the league vs 3rd so a must win match for Broomfield. With the 80s music from the adjacent football club’s family day blaring out the back drop was set as Robin Baker opened the bowling to ‘eye of the Tiger’. Maybe it was the ‘den, den den den’ opening riff or a slightly damp pitch but Robin’s very first ball was a pearler that hit the top of off and sent their supposedly dangerous opener on his way. The ultra rare first ball wicket seem to shock OC’s into submission, with Robin and fellow opener Scot Reilley keeping things quiet for the initial spell. Andy Pyne then came on first change and, with the ‘It’s raining men’ backing music, Andy proceeded to make it rain wickets as he ripped through their middle order, finishing with a 5 for inc. 3 in one over. Robert Cook then joined the party with Michael Sawyer taking a catch at 3rd man. The openers were brought back on to finish things off and with ‘Take on Me’ ringing in his ears as Scot chipped in with a wicket but Broomfield couldn’t quite twist the knife, with OC’s finishing 126/9.

Captain John and Liam Atkins opened the batting and clearly didn’t want a repeat of Broomfield’s first over fireworks so made a pedestrian start. Liam fell after a couple of overs to a ball that stayed low, which opened the door for Graeme Mansfield. With the run rate not being quite where it should be David Bowie’s ‘under pressure’ kicked in and Graeme was forced into a defensive game as they came round the wicket to his left hand. Despite hanging on for a few overs Graeme played around a straight one, ironically as ‘another one bites the dust’ hit the airwaves. Time for Scot Reilley, making his return from the 1st team. As Pat Benatar says, via the football club playlist, love is a battlefield, but Scot didn’t seem to have too much trouble negotiating the damp wicket and he loved hitting 4s to push us past the 100. John made his customary 50 then gave his wicket away by hitting down the throat of long on. However, ‘we are the champions’ rang out which provided the perfect backdrop for Matty Mansfield to bring Broomfield home, with the total being passed in just over 30 overs. Broomfield well and truly back on track.
