Rettendon II v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 20 Jun 2009 at 1.30pm
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost by 40 runs

Match report Another one of those weeks when it was easier to name two elevens who were not available than who could play meant Broomfield arrived to their must-win match light on bowling, batting, fielding and general oomph against an ageing but disciplined Rettendon side.

Wary of possible later weather, encouraged by the green wicket and not entirely confident of defending any total with a 35 yard boundary, the 1 in 4 slope and sahara-size dune bumps on the outfield, Thorn won the toss and elected to bowl. Fisher and Copeman started ok but the rettendon openers's slogs were fairly safe and maintained a steady 5 an over rate without much bother until Fisher got the breakthrough with a mistimed mow to cow ending up at cover. Dobson held two sharp catches at slip off the ever reliable Foster, rolling back the years, and when the dangerous opener spooned a pull straight to short fine leg Rettendon were in trouble at about 140-4.

After a two bounced long hop and a head high no ball, the effect of Dobson's two year absence dissipated and drew the big hitting Mansell into an early airy waft but the chance at long on in the valley was dropped. This proved to be the key moment as he smacked his way to a quick fifty and the other batsmen were able to play around him until Dobson took an exocet at cover and Copeman and Green bowled well at the end of the innings to keep them down to 224, one run short of a batting point that we would gain with a successful chase.

Knowing that only 5 an over with such a treacherous outfield and short boundary would be easy if the chase was sensible, the skipper hit a brainless leading edge over mid off and then appeared to run in treacle up the hill for a kamikaze third run and was run out not even half way. Woodger and O'Riordan re-grouped well and kept the required rate under six until the dodgy track kept one low and trapped Woodger, 101-2 after 25 overs. Green set out well, trying to play straight and run hard but played on.

With no more recognised batsmen in the hutch O'Riordan tried to impose himself a little too much on the Rettendon back-up bowlers and skied a return catch. Foster was stranded as the other dominoes collapsed until Copeman senior gave good support and 80 off 10 overs was down to 40 off 5 before the last two straight balls were missed.

Overall a depressingly draining defeat against a side we should be so much better than. One dropped catch meant we were chasing 50 more than we should and diabolical running gave away an important wicket for free.

Promotion pretty much impossible now already with 4 defeats from 8 games as the top three have only lost 3 games between them. We host table toppers Writtle next week, then travel to second place Aythorpe, if we lose both of them we may get dragged down into a relegation battle, so we need to radically up our game to stop the slide.
