Bentley 3rd v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 04 May 2019 at 13:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report First game of the season for the 2nds and the pressure was on to justify our promotion to Div 8 with a win. Broomfield were in the field first and opened the bowling with Jack Reilley and Robin Baker. Once the cobwebs were blown away the opening bowlers kept the run rate down and eventually broke the resolve of Bentley. First Jack tricked the opener into a drive which fell into the safe hands of young Noah Pyne, who was making his League debut at 13 years old. Robin kept up the pressure with some swing which nearly got its rewards via an outside edge, however Captain John’s best juggling clown impression wasn’t quite enough to hold on. Justice was served, however, next over when the off stump went flying. The loss of most of Bentley’s top order seemed to break their spirit and accordingly it was the Pyne’s that took center stage. Old father Pyne took 4 wickets to decimate the middle order, with a bowled Pyne/caught Pyne to add a nice touch to proceedings. Broomfield’s depth of bowling then came to the fore with Scott Reilley and Graeme Mansfield chipping in with 2 wickets a piece, ably assisted by Micheal Sawyer’s pace cranking up the pressure. Bentley did well to bring up the century, finishing 107 all out. The inclement weather did its best to disrupt proceedings throughout the day and captain John and Chris O’Riordan were looking nervously at the sky as they went about chasing down the modest total. After a slow start and some impressive Bentley bowling, Chris eventually fell to a straight ball that stayed low. Micheal Sawyer came in at 3 looking to blast away the runs but another good delivery saw him returning to the pavilion soon after. Captain John had remained steadfast throughout and his reticence seemed to disappear once joined at the crease by the big hitting Scott Reilley. The 3rd pairing set about the change of bowling and put any short ball to the sword, blasting 4s and 6s to quickly get the score up towards the 100. Perhaps seeing the finishing line too early, Scott fell LBW a few runs short of the winning line but John had by then made his half century, which was acknowledged by him a good minute before the rest of us. George Watkins then joined him to finish the job with a well timed glancing blow down the leg side to claim the glory and the win. Given that many of the team hadn’t picked up a bat or ball for 8 months, and the capricious cricket gods playing tricks with the weather, this was a good win that hopefully sets the tone for the rest of the season.
