Broomfield Cricket Club Sunday XI & Social v Benfleet Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 20 Jul 2008 at 14.00
Broomfield Cricket Club Lost By 5 wickets
Match report
After a break of 3 weeks Broomfield took on a side from the Shephard Neame league for the second time hoping to make more of an impression. Broomfield won the toss and elected to bat with a side that on paper had the potential to score quick runs.
Phil Win and Chris O'Riordan opened the batting with Win making an early departure for 2 runs and Jacob Spindler following shortly after for a duck. A monumental 10 ball duck for the skipper on his birthday only prolonged the agony at the start of the innings. With the score at 12-3, the middle order needed to pull off something special. The number 5 and 6 both being caught out on single figures didn't help the cause and put added pressure on the number 2. Eggy came out at 7 and showed defiance in battling to 8 runs from 49 balls on debut, and promoted from 11 to number 8 Chris Thorn went about his usual Sunday afternoon business. When O'Riodan got out after a solid 44, Thorn followed him into the dressing room for 24. The last wicket partnership between Thorn senior and Steve Owens added another 20 runs to the final score of 132 for 9.
Benfleet would have felt confident in chasing such a small total with a young and talented side. Phil Win took the first over and Steve Owens bowled the second, both bowling reasonably tidy lines it took 11 overs for the breakthrough to come with Bridge being bowled by Win. It was the first change introduction of under 13 seamer Scott Fisher who took 2 wickets for 17 runs in 2 spells. James Chippendale also picked up a couple of wickets but was expensive when Hiscock the number 7 came to the crease. Together with Chris Coldicott they carried Benfleet over the line even after a difficult 3 ball spell from Newman.
The captains man of the match was Acraman for his bowling performance of 4 for 10 off 8 overs.
