Broomfield Cricket Club Sunday XI & Social v Benfleet 3rd XI on Sun 17 May 2009 at 14:00
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 1 Wicket
Match report
The first long awaited (by some) sunday friendly of the season was upon us with the opposition being Benfleets 2nd XI. The last fixture of the previous season ending with Broomfield taking an incredibly close match and achieving the start of an unbeaten streak for the side.
Broomfield won the toss and the skipper decided to have a bowl first with a strong looking attack at his disposal on a green pitch that had been rained on throughout the morning. Benfleet opened up positively and saw off the first 8 overs for 30 odd runs before Ronnie Rooney Ronnie broke through having Hunt caught behind. His opening partner and no.3 fell shortly after and at 60-3 Broomfield looked in a good position with Bangladeshi Paceman Ruhul Amin still feeling fresh.
Holmes bowled through 8 overs and returned very tidy figures with accurate bowling. At the other end the captain Green decided it was time to turn the screw so he came on with Newman at the other end to burgle a few wickets. The plan came off like a treat, and with Green striking once with a pacey delivery knocking the number 4's off stump over, it was Newman that claimed a few victims. His Leg spin/Pies were effective in luring the batsmen into false security and he bagged 4 of Benfleets order. Holmes came back at the sightscreen end and picked up another wicket before the delaration at 146-9.
Broomfield felt positive with the openers getting the side off to a flyer. A 50 run partnership between Spindler (20) and Chambers (43) was an unexpected onslaught that could only be broken by a harsh desicion of caught behind for Spindler. Newman continued the attack with a quickfire 20 before holing out to cover bringing the skipper to the middle.
At 85 for 2 the side felt they could push home with an easy win but M.Ackerman bowled well to get Chambers with an off stump yorker and Porter first ball with a similar delivery. Cowell came to the middle with a sensible head on his shoulders looking to work the singles and two's, but he was disappointed with a poor lbw desicion being struck on the hip. Rob Holmes looked solid with a textbook cover drive for 4 to get him off the mark but at 96-5 the game looked to be swinging back into Benfleet's hands. Holmes had his off-peg knocked over along with Stephenson in quick sucsession and really had Broomfield lookin the underdogs at 102-7. 45 needed with 3 wickets left and plenty of time still looked to be winnable and there was no telling Ruhul to bat calmly as he hit a few nice shots and got out for 10 to a freak bouncer that was gloved up to the keeper.
Matt Need was perhaps the most impressive batsman given the situation and experience the young man had. 112-8 and it looked to be all over but with the captain moving steadily towards double figures in a marathon innings, the under 15 showed he could play a beautiful cover drive on 2 occassions, picking up boundaries and helping to rotate the strike too. His 11 and a couple of nice drives from Green helped with scores draw level. Need was not in the middle to knock off the winning run as he holed out to short cover. Ronnie Rooney Ronnie came to the crease with 3 balls left of impressive young leg spinner Verlanders 12th over. A corker had him playing at a ball just outside off stump and being caught at slip. Benfleet went up screaming but umpire Lloyd Newman did not complete the hat-trick of bad desicions for Broomfield as he gave it not out (bump ball). The over was played out and a tense final over was prevented when green opened the face and squeezed the winning run through point.
A great start to the season for the Sunday XI and carrying on from last season the third game unbeaten for them.
