Aythorpe Roding II v Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 04 Jul 2009 at 1.30pm
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
A week of hot sun, Ashes due to start next week and a trip to picturesque Aythorpe in prospect, instead of having 40 playing members banging on the door to play some cricket it was another week of frantic phone calls and being able to name almost three entire teams of people not available. Despite this we were still able to field eleven cricketers, albeit with five aged 14 or under.
Being on the back foot against a team with only one defeat this season, the Broomfield skipper decided to field in the heat on a decent looking batting track with a fraglie looking bowling attack for a bit of damaged limitation, fearful of a batting collapse and fielding embarrassment like last week.
The following seven hours showed up the skipper's knowledge of cricket and his own player's skill and mental strength. Copeman and Farrow started superbly, beating the outside edge with movement and bounce from a helpful pitch, Farrow skittling bats two and three. First change Turner and Foster picked up a wicket apiece, Farrow taking a good skied catch. At about 50-4 the Aythorpe skipper steadied the ship. Although boundaries were coming regularly with shortish sidelines and a quick outfield, the fielding was energetic and the juggled around bowling disciplined and Spennock drew the oppo skipper forward and Copeman jnr took a good stumping. Farrow then held onto a rocket at short midwicket to remove the anchored opener and Aythorpe were in trouble at 160-6.
Deacon came on to bamboozle the lower order with great flight and guile for a youngster, the pressure accounting for a run out and an ugly hoik. Farrow came back for good death bowling, learning quickly after disappearing over a hedge to get revenge. Unfortunately we still couldn't quite get all ten wickets, but to restrict them to under 200 was an awesome effort.
The chase could have started better, the skipper missing another straight ball after scratching around like a little lost child in a supermarket, and Eglin finding square leg with a not quite well timed enough hook. Mason and Foster set about defending their wicket and run accumulation to stay up with the rate. A couple of drops and other fielding mistakes started to get to the Aythorpe side until a good ball got Foster.
After seeing off the opener's spell 70-3 at drinks, Woodger and Mason started freeing their arms a bit more to get after the back up bowlers, Woodger holing out and Aythorpe maybe getting complacent with youngster Farrow next in and Mason's back injury getting more painful. Farrow gave excellent support, the fielders starting to wilt in the late afternoon sun and continual field changing with the left/right handed batsmen. Bowling changes became a bit more desperate and fielding mroe ragged, Farrow eventually falling and Spennock soon after. Youngster Turner was unlucky to be run out but that brought in Copeman senior to help Mason get over the last few hurdles. After a couple of lucky edges, the middle of the bat smashed two huge sixes to win with ten balls to spare.
Overall an excellent game with many positives, especially all five colts performing admirably and no doubt I'll be picking them as first names on the team sheet ahead of the 30 no-shows's erratic availability.
