Broomfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Burnham Sports II on Sat 16 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Broomfield Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report With four of the past five previous meetings with Burnham being affected by the weather (including two total washouts), it was no surprise that the early May sunshine retreated and rain fell fairly heavily on thursday, friday and saturday morning. Fortunately due to the quick drainage and weeks of dry undersoil, with the wind and sunshine by the 1pm toss up the pitch was a typical broomfield track - firm and flat but a little soft underneath. We were pleasantly surprised the oppo skipper chose to bat.

A tight opening spell from Asopa was again unrewarded with another possible nick behind not given and uppish uncontrolled strokes falling safe. Fisher and Farrow performed well in their first league matches of the season, a year older and faster and allowed to bowl five in a spell, both beating the outside edge on occasions but too many loose deliveries relieved the pressure and allowed Burnham's openers to reach 50 unscathed.

Spennock got the breakthrough almost immediately and the main discussion at drinks was whether Thorn should relieve Foster of the gloves if we thought a second spinner would be needed. As the skipper contemplated the change, Baker was getting into a nice rhythm with pace and variable bounce troubling the batsmen and the scoreboard virtually stopped for five overs.

With this continued pressure from both bowlers the batsmen got themselves out, getting bowled going for windmill heaves and panicking leading to a run out with Farrow cool under pressure. Baker got in on the wickets with another good rising ball looping out to cover. As three fielders converged everyone else seemed to call for Chris but as this sounded like Tris someone else added O'Riordan and a comical collision was avoided.

Burnham never had any lower order impetus so Broomfield kept attacking fields and were rewarded as Spennock took a good slip catch at the second attempt off the improving Baker who carried on tirelessly to bowl straight out from the sightscreen end. Fisher came back to finish off from the pavilion end and got a wicket with a decent yorker on the toe to make the batsman hobble off, but Broomfield were not unable to bowl out more defiant batting from burnham's nine and ten.

As the last home innings ended in 99 all out, with clouds still around and two of the top four looking to leave early to go to a party in another county, it was important to get a steady but positive to start to the chase. After a couple of midwicket mows to the pavilion, Thorn misjudged the pace from the top end and played on in the 7th over. Usual 1st XI opener John O pounced on anything loose and with his nephew's help pressurised the fielders to get more runs, quickly eating away at the small target, a partnership of 89 in 17 overs. It was left to Foster to hit the winning runs in the 28th over, with Keyes not needed, despite having had his pads on from the start, practising in the newly refurbished net!

Overall a pleasing all-round team performance with threatening and controlled bowling accompanying focussed fielding, followed by a clinical run chase to give the 2nds their best start to a season in six years. Let's make sure it continues next week away to Terling!
